Steps to Fix “Low Disk Space” Warnings

If you’re receiving warnings about low disk space, follow these simple steps to free up space on your computer and keep it running smoothly.


Step 1: Delete Temporary Files

  1. Open the Disk Cleanup Tool:
    • Press Windows Key + S, type Disk Cleanup, and select it.
  2. Select the drive you want to clean (usually C:).
  3. Check the boxes for Temporary files, Recycle Bin, and other non-essential items.
  4. Click OK to delete the selected files.

Step 2: Empty the Recycle Bin

  1. Right-click on the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop.
  2. Select Empty Recycle Bin and confirm.
  3. This will permanently delete files you no longer need.



Step 3: Move Large Files to External Storage

  1. Identify large files on your computer:
    • Open File Explorer, right-click on a drive, and select Properties > Tools > Optimize.
  2. Move unnecessary large files to an external drive or cloud storage.


Step 4: Delete files from Downloads folder

  1. Identify unnecessary files on your Downloads folder:
    • Open File Explorer, open downloads
  2. Delete files from download folder.

Step 5: Escalate to IT Support

If you’re still running low on disk space:

  • Contact your IT support team.
  • Provide details about:
    • The current free space on your drive.
    • Any large files or programs you’re unable to remove.
    • The steps you’ve already tried.
