To connect a projector to a laptop, a cable is required. This is called a VGA cable and looks like this:

The projector will usually have color coded plugs as well as being labeled. Look for the blue plug that is the same color as the cable shown above and it should also be labeled VGA.
Once the Laptop and the projector are connected together: To display your laptop’s screen on the external monitor/projector, hold down the FN key (in the lower left corner of your keyboard) and press the “F8” key…
The 1st time you press FN+F8 it will display on both screens (extended screen).
The 2nd time you press FN+F8 it will display on only the projector.
The 3rd time your press FN+F8 it will go back to displaying only on your laptop
